Even if your child is over compulsory school age, there may be situations where you may want to continue to follow the requirements of a home schooling option recognized by Michigan law until your child completes high school (filing a homeschooling notice, keeping attendance records, and the like, etc.). Michigan students are not allowed to drop out of high school until age 18 unless they have their parents` consent under laws passed by the State House. The bills passed Wednesday in the Democratic-led House by a vote of 71 to 37. The bill now goes to the Republican-led Senate. State laws require children of a certain age to attend some form of education, whether it is a public school, a private school, a home school, or otherwise. Michigan`s compulsory education laws require children between the ages of six and 16 to attend school and allow homeschooling as long as it teaches subjects comparable to those of equivalent public classes. Lawmakers who opposed the measure fear that forcing students to stay in school against their will could ruin the atmosphere for those who want to be in school. Michigan law requires any child who was 6 years old before December 1 and under the age of 18 to attend school or comply with the Homeschooling Act.
