Volunteer Legal Services Austin Texas

Volunteer Legal Services is a non-profit organization that provides free legal advice and representation to people with civil matters who cannot afford a lawyer. Our mission is to facilitate access to the civil justice system for low-income clients by providing, supporting and training volunteer lawyers who provide free legal advice and representation. Unrepresented litigation project: This clinic is for litigants with uncontested civil law issues such as name changes, landlord/tenant issues and professional licensing. Paralegals are needed to assist clients in completing applications, waivers and affidavits of inability to pay court fees. Volunteer paralegals are also able to explain general court proceedings to litigants who have never participated in court proceedings before. All Pro-se forms can be found on the TexasLawHelp.org website. The Pro Bono Service Committee coordinates volunteers and develops relationships with pro bono organizations in the Austin area. Comprehensive legal and hospitality clinics require you to fill out an intake form with your basic information, including but not limited to: your name, address, phone number, date of birth, and income information. (You can bring this pre-filled form to the legal clinic, which will make the process much faster.) You can also fill out additional forms or questionnaires specific to your legal issue. Current pro bono projects looking for help: What are your interview skills? Did you know that the skills you currently possess could help someone? Do you have two hours a month to engage in an experience that can make a difference in someone`s life? Please consider volunteering at evening clinics on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Webb Middle School. Please contact the VLS coordinator to select a date for clinical training.

This clinic offers free estate planning services to the cancer community. Anyone who has had cancer in the past or is currently living with cancer is eligible for services. Clients come on a Saturday for a one-time appointment and meet with a lawyer and paralegal and have prepared and signed a will, power of attorney for health, financial power of attorney and medical instruction (also called a living will). Paralegals are needed to review documents, testify wills, certify documents, and assist lawyers with client meetings and will signing ceremonies. Clinics are held quarterly and are held at various locations throughout the Austin area. Clinics usually last from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m. Volunteers can volunteer for a short shift or for the whole day.

If you are interested, contact Amber Haney, volunteer co-chair, or envoyez-info@cancerlawclinic.org by email for more information. For clinic schedules and volunteer registration, visit the www.cancerlawclinic.org website. The “heart and soul” of any professional association is its service to the local community. CAMA doesn`t just serve paralegals – we also serve the community in which we live, work and play. As a student paralegal or paralegal, you can support access to justice service providers and clients through invaluable research, registration assistance, document preparation, translation and interpretation, fundraising and more. According to the World Justice Project, an estimated 5 billion people worldwide have unmet needs for justice. This includes individuals in our own community, and we are determined to do our part to close that gap. Help us make a difference and join us in providing legal assistance to those in need. Pro bono evening clinics offer people the opportunity to apply for civil services and receive legal advice. It is a joint effort of RioGrande Legal Aid, Volunteer Legal Services, Landlord Tenant Counsel, the Catholic Diocese, several law firms, and other non-profit organizations.

CAMA provides volunteers and interpreters to clinics. Paralegals support the clinic by helping candidates fill out the forms on the family law page. The forms are simple and easy to complete, but they can be confusing to the public. We help them understand the questions and capture as much information as possible. Clinics start at 18:00 and usually end at 20:00. Both clinics are located from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Travis County Law Library and Self-Help Center, in the Ned Granger Building (across from the Travis County Courthouse), 314 W 11th Street, #140, Austin, Texas 78701. Volunteers are sought at all times between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., so paralegals can come for an hour during their lunch break. Interested paralegals can contact Amber Haney at probono@capatx.org.

Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (VLS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in May 1981 by a small group of people dedicated to supporting the defection of low-income individuals seeking help from the local legal aid office. The Austin Bar Association hosts a free legal clinic for all U.S. veterans once a month. Volunteer lawyers provide brief legal advice free of charge and without appointment during these clinics. The Austin Bar also provides free telephone legal advice to eligible veterans and helps resolve minor legal issues for veterans in Travis and surrounding counties. Veterans clinics are held once a month from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Austin VA Outpatient Clinic, 7901 Metropolis Drive, Austin, TX. Paralegals are needed to assist with admission, assist clients with forms, and maintain the database.

CAMA members interested in this project should contact Doug Lawrence in doug@austinbar.org or Stephanie Seuser in probono@capatx.org. For more information on how to volunteer, click here. There is a need for more Spanish-speaking interpreters in evening clinics. Interpreters help applicants fill out forms, sit down with lawyers and interpret their legal advice to applicants. This is a great opportunity to learn about different areas of law and address a critical need of people. Please inform the VLS coordinator if you can volunteer as an interpreter. Uncontested Family Walk-in Case Review Clinic: This clinic is supervised by Laurel Holland, the supervising counsel for litigants in uncontested family law cases. This clinic is staffed by volunteer lawyers who review the pro-se documents of individuals who have filed for an uncontested divorce and who must have their final decisions reviewed before moving on to the uncontested file for the judge`s signature. First, you need to go to a legal clinic sponsored or hosted by VLS. If you attend one of our comprehensive legal clinics, lawyers will be present to advise you, regardless of your income entitlement. If you attend one of our reception legal clinics where the VLS Outreach Coordinator sets up an information table at a community centre, there will usually be no lawyer present – admission legal clinics are usually for people who cannot attend our full legal clinics on Mondays and Wednesdays, but still want to know if they are eligible for our services.
