Different types of public interest organisations deal with these areas in different ways. There are impact litigation groups dedicated to achieving global legal and social change, legal advisory organizations that provide direct support to clients, public defense attorneys who provide defense advice to people who cannot afford legal assistance, policy centers, community development groups, and international public interest organizations. There`s a reason public interest lawyers are among the happiest in the legal profession: they use their legal skills to fight for important causes and marginalized clients who otherwise have little hope of a chance in our legal system. However, there are significant differences both within individual attitudes and between them with regard to their priorities, objectives and strategies.

During your law studies, you will focus on gaining practical experience such as filing and drafting applications, court experience and interacting with clients. This can be accomplished through clinical work, a summer internship, a semester internship, volunteering at a nonprofit, or a scholarship for law students such as Equal Justice Works` Summer Corps program. While in law school, try to take courses in trial advocacy and public interest courses, participate in moot court competitions, and become a member of a relevant student public interest organization. As a student, Stacie Pavao fell in love in 18 with “the public interest aspect of government work and the greater societal impact it had” after completing an internship at the Massachusetts Attorney General`s Office in the Charities Division. She decided to pursue this passion at law school, where she eventually articled at the Massachusetts Department of Revenue at the Litigation Bureau and the Suffolk County District Attorney`s Office, among others. “I love the unique challenges that each day brings, while gaining invaluable hands-on experience in the courtroom,” says Pavao. Public interest employers hire independently and on an ad hoc basis, and students typically secure positions through networking, direct contacts and recruitment events. The Office of Public Interest and Community Services (OPICS) coordinates numerous recruitment and networking programs with public interest employers throughout the year. One of the largest national recruitment events is the Equal Justice Works job fair each fall. Last but not least, the attorney may also work in government in the public interest, whether in state and federal prosecutors` offices or in government agencies, including attorney general`s offices.

Work may focus on both domestic and international issues, including human rights. Increase the availability of pro bono legal aid for those who cannot afford a lawyer. Whether it is pro bono work in a traditional company or issue-oriented work in a private public interest company, issue-based advocacy can be found along more traditional lines of practice. Many private companies offer the opportunity to practice public service law through pro bono programs. These programs may allow or require lawyers to perform a certain number of court-appointed hours or to work with a local or national public interest organization in cases. The formats of these programs are very different, as is the commitment and organization of the company. The practice of public interest law includes protecting the rights of individuals, promoting justice and improving for the common good. All of these important goals can be achieved through a variety of means and attitudes. Like any legal specialty, the study of public interest law includes focused legal courses and experiential learning opportunities.

For example, all of the following areas may overlap with international public interest law: human rights, women`s rights, trade, labour, environmental protection, project finance and development.
