The honours programme is designed to give students in the College of Arts and Sciences the opportunity to pursue their interests as part of a community of researchers. Students who complete an honor assignment with at least a cumulative GPA of 3.5, completing three consecutive terms of PSY 197 are eligible for honors in the major. Each summer, counsellors review student files and contact students who do not meet the annual requirements. Starting in the fall of 2021, the Arts and Science program has changed the way students can be admitted to the program. To complete the specialization program, including the Academic Engagement Award for Grantees, you must submit an online petition to the Honours Program within the first two weeks of your final term at UCSB (you will list all current specialization courses). Honors consultants conduct the annual review each summer, based on the GPA and honours experience gained during that spring term. The GPA redundancies of the program cannot be disputed. In case of insufficient honor work, the work of the summer session may be considered for readmission to the program. Upon discharge, it is your responsibility to inform the program of all courses in the summer session. Honors advisors will then work with you on a possible resumption of the program. Capstone Focus: The goal of the honors program is to encourage students to use the specialization experiences to explore UCSB from a liberal arts perspective, find a major they are passionate about, and build close connections with faculty through specialty sections, seminars, and contracts. The explicit goal of the program is to lead students into some kind of transformative academic experience. At the end of the cornerstone, the student submits a 500-800 word statement that places the cornerstone in the context of their overall UCSB experience. It will be a space to ask and answer questions from others, share tips and tricks and find support from your colleagues. A: Research: • Conduct independent research and enroll in a department 196, 197, 198 or 199 (e.g. ME 199) • Must achieve a grade of B or higher. • Paid research positions cannot apply Degree courses (course #200-299): • Graduate courses taken for a college degree may not apply • Graduate courses must be in STEM fields • Must obtain a grade B EAP or higher: • EAP can be considered honor courses as long as you are taking engineering-related courses (i.e. major). The number of specialization courses completed is equal to the number of units earned per course. • You can earn all 6 units during the EAP as long as the courses are technically adequate. To complete the specialization program, you must submit an online application to the specialization program within the first two weeks of your final term at UCSB (you will list all current specialization courses). Graduates will submit this online form to intend to complete the specialization program before the end of the second week of their final term.

Note: If you graduate in the summer or fall and are participating in the commencement program, you must submit your Honours Completion Form early (before the spring date) so that advisors can determine if you are on track to complete the program and be eligible for the Honours Commencement Badge. Specialty students may enroll in special Honors sections for lectures led by the faculty member teaching the course. Students in the first and second years of the program are also eligible to enroll in subordinate specialization seminars. With faculty approval, Honor students in the Upper Division can write their own Honor Contracts in Upper Division courses and provide them with special research opportunities. These opportunities give students the opportunity to find mentors among some of UCSB`s most dedicated faculty. For students interested in a career in a health profession, the specialization program offers health professions seminars, clinical internship opportunities, and career and application counseling through its health sciences specialization program. Outside of the pandemic, the specialization program hosts an awards ceremony and reception, usually on the Friday afternoon of graduation weekend.
